Erg Chebbi (Merzouga): The Majestic Icon
Rising directly from the desert pavement near the Algerian border, Erg Chebbi features Morocco’s most photographed dunes. Reaching heights of 150 meters, the dunes change color from apricot to burnt umber as the sun descends. Because paved roads run straight to Merzouga, camps here offer true luxury glamping: en-suite ceramic bathrooms, king beds with electric blankets, and fine Berber dining under the stars.
Erg Chigaga (M'Hamid): The Untamed Wilderness
Located south of Zagora, Erg Chigaga is much more remote. Reaching the dunes requires a 2-hour bumpy off-road 4x4 journey across dried lake beds and stone tracks. While the dunes are lower (around 60 meters), the dune sea spans over 40 kilometers of unspoiled solitude.
Beware the "2-Day Zagora Desert Trip" Trap
Many travelers mistakenly book 2-day trips to Zagora believing they will see giant sand dunes. In truth, Zagora is a flat, rocky gravel desert (Reg). To witness true towering Saharan sand dunes, you must allow a minimum of 3 days (ideally 4 days) to journey to Erg Chebbi in Merzouga.
